Traditional Balinese Meals & Cooking Experience

Cooking Class in the Home of a Balinese Family.

Experience visiting a Balinese traditional family home and meet the whole family. You will see a different side of Bali, from the perspective of daily life and activities in a village and by having direct contact with a Balinese family, this puts you in touch with the culture in an authentic way.
Balinese are passionate about their spices, food preparation and presentation of their unique dishes. Having dinner with a Balinese family with Ubud Village Plate, allows you to enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal in a local Balinese village. You will make 7 dishes. It’s a wonderful cultural exchange as you can ask all those questions on your mind about Balinese rituals, life, the culture and everything you wanted to know. Your hosts all speak good English and love to cook and welcome guests. It’s the Balinese way!

A heart-warming family awaits you

Your Balinese host family cooks a healthy, delicious traditional meal (any dietary requests are catered for) and you have the option to take a cooking class if you wish and visit the local market.

Traditional Balinese cuisine includes wonderful dishes like urab (bean sprouts and green bean salad with coconut), satay chicken or meat (to suit your taste) with fresh seasonal spices, peanut sauce made from scratch, a variety of curry dishes, pepes which is a steamed tuna or vegetarian or chicken dish wrapped and steamed in banana leaves. You will be introduced to local vegetables and learn how to use them in cooking, like jackfruit and snakefruit. You will enjoy around 7 different dishes and fresh coconut water (in the coconut shell) as your welcome drink. Beer or wine is available on request. A delicious dessert is served which is either a surprise or the ever-popular black rice pudding with coconut cream.

Your host family will adapt your meal to suit your dietary wishes if needed e.g gluten free, vegan, vegetarian, halal or a specific special dietary requirement. Just note this on the booking form.

Village plate is a community initiative and allows for a genuine cultural exchange where you meet a local Balinese family and you get a glimpse into village life. It is a great way to make new friends and enjoy the benefit of this cross-cultural, authentic experience, which is equally as fascinating for both parties.

We support the Pejeng Village Cultural Preservation Programme and provide a private traditional dance instructor and free costume hire. The programme is so popular now. More than 20 kids come along, who normally did not dance. The kids love it and now get to dance on many occasions with shiny gold thread costumes and elaborate headdresses.

Village plate includes complimentary pick up in the local Ubud area, or if you are further out of town, transport arrangements can be made at an additional local cost.
